In short
Why get your home appraised during a divorce?
An appraisal gives you an objective value that you can both build on. That value determines how much one partner must buy out the other, or what you can expect together when selling. A neutral appraisal prevents the discussion about "what is the house worth" from becoming a conflict.
During a divorce, almost everything revolves around one number: what is the family home worth today? That number determines whether one of you can buy out the other, and for how much. It also determines what remains if you sell together and pay off the loan. As long as you do not have a shared, accepted value, any agreement remains shaky.
That is why an objective appraisal is not a formality but a starting point. It gives you a neutral anchor point where neither of you needs to feel disadvantaged. When you put a price on the house yourself, it almost always raises suspicion. An independent appraisal removes that discussion before it escalates.
